Tiling a shower requires significantly more precision than regular floor tiling due to water drainage slopes, waterproofing assemblies, inside and outside 90-degree corners, and plumbing cutouts. Running out of tile mid-project can cause disaster if the manufacturer lot or dye shade changes between production runs.
Step-by-Step Shower Tile Calculation Formula
To calculate tile square footage manually:
- Step 1 (Wall Area): Multiply Total Wall Perimeter (Back Wall + Both Side Walls) × Wall Tile Height.
- Step 2 (Floor & Ceiling): Multiply Shower Pan Width × Depth. If tiling the ceiling, add the same square footage.
- Step 3 (Niches & Curbs): Add 4 sq. ft. for a standard 12″×24″ shampoo niche (including back and four inside returns). Add 2 to 3 sq. ft. for a shower curb threshold.
- Step 4 (Subtract Deductions): Subtract window openings (e.g. 24″×36″ = 6 sq. ft.).
- Step 5 (Apply Waste Factor): Multiply Net Square Footage by 1.12 to 1.18 depending on pattern complexity.
- Step 6 (Box Count): Divide Gross Sq Ft by Sq Ft per Box, and always round up.

Can I use the same tile for shower walls and the shower floor?

How do you calculate shower wall square footage?
Multiply the perimeter of the tiled walls by the height of the shower. For example, a 3-wall 36×36 inch shower with 8-foot walls has 9 feet of perimeter (3 + 3 + 3 ft) multiplied by 8 ft height = 72 sq. ft. of wall area before deductions.
How many boxes of tile do I need for my shower?
