How this paint coverage calculator works

This paint coverage calculator multiplies the perimeter of the room by the ceiling height, subtracts about 21 square feet for each door and 12 square feet for each window, and adds the ceiling if you choose. It then multiplies by your coats, adds a waste allowance and divides by the coverage rate printed on the can.

Already know your area? Use the square feet tab. It works as a square footage calculator for paint, so you can enter a measured wall area and get gallons straight away.

Measuring tips for an accurate paint calculator square feet result

Measure each wall at its widest point and use the tallest ceiling height. Subtract tubs and tall tile surrounds if they cover the lower walls. Use bathroom-rated paint with a satin or semi-gloss finish, because it resists moisture and mildew. Prime new drywall, patched areas and dark colors before your first coat.

Bathroom paint cost and brand choice

Price per gallon changes the total more than anything else. If you are comparing premium lines, read why Benjamin Moore paint is so expensive or find out why Sherwin-Williams paint is so expensive, then enter your chosen price above to update the estimate.

Bathroom paint FAQ

How much paint do I need to paint my bathroom?

Most bathrooms need 1 to 2 gallons. A 5 × 8 ft bathroom with 8 ft ceilings has about 175 sq ft of wall after doors and windows, so two coats need roughly 1 gallon. Add about 40 sq ft if you are painting the ceiling.

Will 1 quart of paint cover a bathroom?

Usually not. A quart covers about 85 to 100 sq ft for one coat, while a small bathroom has 125 sq ft or more of wall. One quart works for a ceiling, a vanity, trim or a tiny powder room with one coat.

How many coats of paint do you need in a bathroom?

Two coats give the best color and moisture protection. One coat can be enough when repainting a similar color with a paint-and-primer formula. Dark-to-light changes or bare drywall may need primer plus two coats.

How many sq ft will 1 gallon of paint cover?

One gallon covers about 350 to 400 sq ft on smooth, primed walls. Textured or unprimed surfaces drop that to 250 to 300 sq ft. Check the label on your can for the exact rate.
