There could be a lot of reasons there is no running water in your toilet. Maybe you are doing some plumbing jobs or the municipal just doing some major works. Trust me it happens and you are not alone in this situations.

In this very brief tutorial, I will show you two (2) methods on how to flush toilet without running water. But before that, you should know how the flushing system works in a modern flushing toilet. That will help you fix the problem more easily.

How Does The Toilet Flush work?

There is always enough water in the toilet tank as a reserve to make a single flush. There is a stopper at the bottom of the tank. That stopper is connected to the flush handle and whenever you flush, it lifts up and releases the water in the toilet bowl. Using the gravity mechanism, the water cleans everything along its way.

Immediately after the flush, the stopper plugs up back again and the toilet tank gets filled up with water for the next flush. This is how the toilet flushes mechanism works.

How to Flush Toilet without Running Water?

As I said above there are 2 methods that I am gonna show you to solve the problem. You don’t have to follow the 2; following any one of them will do the trick. I have added the relevant video as well so that there is no confusion to understand the process. So here you go!

Method 1: Using the Toilet Bowl

For this method to work, you need a bucket containing at least 2 to 3 gallon of water. You can use any water. If you don’t have any water in your home, collect from your neighbor.

Or if you have a small swimming pool, you can collect water from there. There are lots of water source from where you can get a bucket of water easily.

You don’t need to use the flush handle or to empty the reserved water in the toilet tank. Save the water in the toilet tank for another rainy day.

Assuming you have collected the water, now open the toilet seat and lid of your toilet. Pour the water directly into the bowl. Start slowly at first but quickly afterward. Your toilet mechanism and the pressure from the bucket water will clean everything in the toilet bowl.

Method 2: Filling the Toilet Tank

Assuming you have used even the last flush of your toilet. There is still a way to make the flush normally using the flush handle. For this method to work, you need to open the toilet tank and fill it with water. Collect the water in the same way mentioned in method 1.

Fill the tank of the toilet with water until it almost reaches the top of the overflow tube. Now, all you have to do is just flush the toilet as usual and that should make a regular flush and clean everything in the toilet bowl. Watch the YouTube video to understand what I am talking about.

Last Words

Bad situations may happen, right? So you need to be prepared. Always get a reserve of water in the bucket for emergency usage.

That way, you should have less trouble when there is no running water in the toilet. But be careful with that bucket of water if you have small children in the house!
