How this flooring calculator works
This flooring square foot calculator multiplies length by width, subtracts the tub and any other area you will not tile, then adds a waste allowance for cuts and breakage. It divides the result by your tile size to get a tile count and by your box coverage to get whole boxes.
Already measured your floor? Use the square feet tab. It works as a square footage flooring calculator, so you can enter your area and go straight to boxes and cost.
Flooring calculator square feet: quick reference
This table shows floor area and the amount to buy with 10% waste for common bathroom sizes, before subtracting a tub.
| Bathroom size | Floor area | Buy with 10% waste |
|---|---|---|
| 5 × 5 ft | 25 sq ft | 27.5 sq ft |
| 5 × 8 ft | 40 sq ft | 44 sq ft |
| 8 × 10 ft | 80 sq ft | 88 sq ft |
| 10 × 12 ft | 120 sq ft | 132 sq ft |
Choosing a layout and waste allowance
A straight layout wastes the least because most cuts happen only at the edges. Diagonal and herringbone patterns need more cuts, so plan for 15% to 20% extra. Large tiles in a small room also waste more, so round up if your bathroom has many corners or an alcove.
Flooring cost estimates beyond the tile
Tile is only part of the bill. Add thinset, grout, underlayment, trim and labor. If the vanity is also on your list, see the bathroom vanity replacement cost guide to budget both jobs together.
Waterproofing before you tile
A wet bathroom floor needs a proper moisture barrier under the tile. Compare RedGard vs Hydro Ban to pick the right membrane for your subfloor.

Bathroom flooring FAQ
How do you calculate a bathroom floor?
Multiply length by width for each rectangular section and add the sections together. Subtract any area you will not tile, such as a tub. Add 10% to 15% for waste, then divide by the square feet per box to find how many boxes to buy.
What are flooring calculations & cost estimates?
Flooring calculations turn room measurements into floor area, tile count and boxes. A cost estimate multiplies the area to buy by the price per square foot, then adds materials such as underlayment, thinset and grout, plus labor if you hire a pro.
What is a free flooring calculator?
A free flooring calculator is an online tool that does the math for you at no cost. You enter your room size, tile size, waste percentage and price, and it returns the square feet, number of tiles, boxes and estimated cost.
How do you measure a bathroom floor?
Use a tape measure to find the longest and widest points from wall to wall, and convert inches to feet. Split L-shaped rooms or alcoves into rectangles and measure each one. Measure the tub footprint separately so you can subtract it.
